Chì Mi Anns a’ Bhothan Thu

The inside story of the “bothans”, commonly referred to as illegal drinking dens, and situated in “dry” areas in Lewis, but actually first established in the late 1920s as meeting places for young men as people in rural Lewis moved out of the “blackhouses” into modern homes in the 1920s and 30s.

Chì Mi Anns a’ Bhothan Thu gives us a rare insight into the culture and appeal of the bothan from the 1950s to the late 70s, as contributors share their experiences of this unique Lewis tradition.
